Devices for Preventing Snoring

Snoring is a sleep disorder bothering people all around the globe. There are certain devices that can help in preventing this problem; below we have discussed about some of those devices.

Dental appliances: These are basically oral mouthpieces that are custom made according to the requirements of the patient. They result in advancing of the position of our soft palate and tongue, which in turn prevents snoring. This change in position helps in keeping our air passageways open. According to medical experts, although the dental appliances can prevent snoring effectively, they can result in certain conditions like dry mouth, excessive salivation, facial discomforts and jaw pain.

Tennis ball: A theory provided by some medical experts suggests that people sleeping on their back are the ones more likely to develop snoring habit compared to people who sleep on their side.  The lower jaw of a person sleeping on his back usually has a tendency of dropping down during sleep; this creates a space for allowing the tongue to fall back. The tongue contracts the air passageways, as a result of which the canal through which the air flows get narrowed. Sew a sock holding 1 tennis ball onto the back of your pajamas. This will control your snoring habit by forcing you to sleep on any one side.

Special pillows: The process used by the special pillows for preventing one’s snoring habit is same as that of the previously discussed tennis ball process. These pillows stop the snorers from sleeping on their back. People with snoring habit is suggested to sleep on beds that are elevated at an angle of 30° from the floor; this helps them to stop their jaw from dropping and prevent sliding of their tongue towards their throat’s back. When the jaw and the tongue of an individual is kept in the right alignment during sleep, there will be no blockages in his air passageways. This in turn will prevent snoring.
